What Residual Income Really Bought Us

Published September 2026

When people hear the phrase residual income, they usually think about money.

That makes perfect sense.

After all, the word income is right there in the name.

But after spending more than sixteen years building recurring income through Utility Warehouse, I've realised something surprising.

Money wasn't the greatest reward.

Choice was.

Money Is Only Part of the Story

Of course, additional income matters.

It pays bills, reduces pressure and gives breathing space.

But I've come to believe that those are only the visible benefits.

The invisible benefits are often far more valuable.

Choice Changes Everything

A few months ago my wife Emma and I packed everything we owned into a 7.5-tonne lorry and moved from Whitstable in Kent to Wigton in Cumbria.

People naturally assumed the biggest part of that story was the move itself.

It wasn't.

The important part was that we had the freedom to make that decision.

Nobody offered us permission.

Nobody told us where we had to live.

We simply reached a point where we could ask ourselves:

"Where do we want the next chapter of our lives to begin?"

Freedom Isn't About Doing Nothing

One of the biggest misconceptions about financial freedom is that it means sitting on a beach doing nothing.

That has never appealed to me.

I enjoy working.

I enjoy learning.

I enjoy helping people build something worthwhile.

The freedom I value isn't freedom from work.

It's freedom to choose the work I want to do.

The Real Return on Investment

When I first began building residual income, I measured success in pounds and pence.

Today I measure it differently.

Can we take time away if we need to?

Can we help family members when life throws them a challenge?

Can we choose where we live?

Can we look to the future with confidence rather than anxiety?

Those are the questions that matter now.

Why This Took Years to Understand

If someone had explained this to me sixteen years ago, I probably wouldn't have understood.

Like most people, I was focused on immediate income.

It took years of slowly building recurring income before I realised that the greatest reward wasn't the money arriving each month.

It was the growing number of decisions we were able to make because that income existed.

Final Thoughts

People often ask me what residual income has done for us.

Of course it has increased our income.

But that's no longer the answer I give.

The answer I give today is much simpler.

Residual income gave us choices.

And looking back over the last sixteen years, I honestly can't think of anything more valuable than that.
