Starting a UW Business with No Sales Experience

Published May 2026

One of the biggest misconceptions about building a Utility Warehouse (UW) business is that you need to be a “natural salesperson”.

In reality, many successful UW Partners started with little or no sales experience at all.

Some were teachers, office workers, engineers, parents, tradespeople, or people simply looking for a smarter way to build a second income alongside their normal job.

That Was Certainly True for Me

Before Utility Warehouse, I spent nearly 29 years working for BT.

My background was in IT management — not sales.

In fact, I’m naturally quite introverted and initially found networking and speaking to new people very uncomfortable.

When I first became a UW Partner in 2010, I was also busy building a separate computer repair business at the same time.

Looking back honestly, I was not particularly good at it in the beginning.

It took me around six months to gather my first two customers.

Why Most People Think They Need Sales Skills

When people hear the words “business opportunity”, they often imagine:

That image puts a lot of good people off before they even look properly at the opportunity.

But modern UW businesses are often built very differently.

What Actually Matters More Than Sales Ability

From my experience, the people who succeed long term are not always the loudest or most naturally “salesy”.

More important qualities are:

Utility Warehouse is based around everyday household services people already use:

That makes conversations feel much more natural than trying to convince people to buy luxury products or expensive schemes.

The Turning Point for Me

One of the biggest things that changed my mindset was realising how vulnerable traditional self-employment can feel.

While running my computer repair business, I became very aware that:

If the phone stopped ringing, the income stopped too.

If I became ill, wanted a holiday, or business slowed down, there was no financial safety net.

That was when the idea of building residual income alongside active income started making much more sense to me.

You Don’t Need to Be Perfect

One of the most encouraging things about UW is that you do not need to become an expert overnight.

Many successful Partners start slowly and improve gradually over time.

In my own case, it took several years before the business really gathered momentum.

Today, both my wife Emma and I work the business together and have built a sizeable customer base and team over time — something I genuinely would not have believed possible when we first started.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve been avoiding opportunities like Utility Warehouse because you don’t see yourself as a salesperson, you’re probably not alone.

But many ordinary people quietly build meaningful second incomes by simply:

You do not need to become someone else to make this business work.
